A Case of Familial Periodic Paralysis

Abstract

|
Familial periodic parallrsis is a disease of dominant inheritance characterized by recurrent attacks of flaccid skeletal muscle paralysis assaliated with absent deep tendon reflexes and low serum potassium content. A case of familial periodic paralysis with typical characteristics of flaccid paralyrsis and low serum protassium content was observed in our hospital and herein is presented. The literature was reviewed in specific regards to its pathogenesis and the effect of potassium depletion and sodium loading and the role of aldosterone in the pathogenesis of attacks in this disease were discussed.
